Why Cabbage Seed
I was brought up in a deep rural part of a small island in the Caribbean. Being one of twelve children made it very difficult for my parents that relied totally on the farm for all basic needs. Education was the only way out of poverty and this I enfolded with a passion. School days were tough; I hardly completed a full week as we were constantly needed on Fridays to take care of the vegetables for the market. There were also periods between March and April when I would be off school for weeks owing to the cane reaping season. I took every opportunity in primary school to learn as much as I could to prepare me for high school.
I got the opportunity to attend high school. I also performed extremely well on my external exams. The prospect of going on to further studies was looking great academically but financially my parents could not afford it. My faith has always being hinged on the Lord and so I prayed ardently. I knew that somehow, God was going to work it out.
One morning, I was at the house when my dad sent me to the farm store to purchase two cans of Cabbage Seeds. Being a very willing and respectful child, I quickly took the money from him and set off on my way. It was a long journey and it was raining intermittently. Walking bare feet; I enjoyed stepping in the puddles as I think about further education. It then dawned on me that I had those tins of cabbage seeds in my hands. I looked at them and I said ‘you have to grow’. I believed that ones those seeds germinated then my parents would have enough money to pay for my education.
Months went by and the cabbage seeds really grew. I got all the money I needed for further education. My parents were able to send me to Teachers’ College for the first year. For second and third year I was able to work to help my parents cover the cost. I graduated from teachers’ college in 1999. I further went on to study for Bachelors and Masters Degrees in London.
Life is not always easy but with determination and hard work, success is possible. My change started with cabbage seeds, I can assure you that there is hope. How did your life change?
